Humic acids as electron acceptors for anaerobic microbial oxidation of vinyl chloride and dichloroethene.

چکیده
Anaerobic oxidation of [1,2-14C]vinyl chloride and [1, 2-14C]dichloroethene to 14CO2 under humic acid-reducing conditions was demonstrated. The results indicate that waterborne contaminants can be oxidized by using humic acid compounds as electron acceptors and suggest that natural aquatic systems have a much larger capacity for contaminant oxidation than previously thought.

Sequential application of electron donors and humic acids for the anaerobic bioremediation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons.
In situ anaerobic bioremediation of chlorinated solvents such as perchloroethene (PCE) frequently faces the problem of accumulating toxic, lower chlorinated compounds such as dichloroethene (cis-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC). In the present study, the efficacy of the sequential application of electron donors, supporting reductive dechlorination, and of humic acids, acting as extracellular electr...

Humic substances are a heterogeneous class of moderate molecular weight, yellow-colored biomolecules present in all soils, sediments, and natural waters. Although humic substances are generally resistant to microbial degradation under anaerobic conditions, some microorganisms in soils and sediments can use quinone moieties in humic substances as electron acceptors. Laboratory experiments have s...
متن کاملChemotactic responses to metals and anaerobic electron acceptors in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.
Although a previous study indicated that the dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 lacks chemotactic responses to metals that can be used as anaerobic electron acceptors, new results show that this bacterium responds to both Mn(III) and Fe(III). Cells were also shown to respond to another unusual electron acceptor, the humic acid analog anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate....

Iron-reducing bacteria have been reported to reduce humic acids and low-molecular-weight quinones with electrons from acetate or hydrogen oxidation. Due to the rapid chemical reaction of amorphous ferric iron with the reduced reaction products, humic acids and low-molecular-weight redox mediators may play an important role in biological iron reduction. Since many anaerobic bacteria that are not...
متن کاملA biological method for synthesizing C-vinyl chloride
Introduction Vinyl chloride (VC) is a known human carcinogen and an EPA priority pollutant found in at least 496 of the 1430 sites on the National Priorities List. Manufacturing generates roughly 27 million ton of VC per year in the US, predominantly in the production of the polymer polyvinyl chloride. VC accumulates in polluted groundwater through the anaerobic degradation of multi-chlorinated...
